What Are Zeolites?
Zeolites are naturally occurring minerals created from volcanic activity. Their unique honeycomb lattice frame work of hydrogen, oxygen, aluminum and silicon creates special properties. These attribute make them uniquely suited for gas adsorption, water adsorption and desorption and ion exchange. These characteristics make natural zeolites extremely useful in a wide variety of industries.

There are different types of zeolites, each with unique properties i.e. crystalline structure, cation exchange capacity and chemical composition, as well as, the physical differences of bulk density, hardness, attrition resistence and specific qualities impacted by associated mineral impurities unique to each deposit.
While the percentage of zeolite, and therefore, purity, might be thought to be the defining factor in determining the quality of a natural zeolite, such is not the case when it comes to the application of the zeolite. In practice, the performance of a natural zeolite in a given application may actually be enhanced by what might otherwise be throught of as an impurity.
The type and quantity of the impurities associated with the zeolite in a given deposit include various clays, feldspars, calcite, volcanic glass and silica sand is extremely important. Such associated minerals have an effect, for good or bad, on the performance of a zeolite for a given application. Thus, the importance of the fact that no commercially exploitable natural zeolite deposit is purely zeolite, can not be over stressed.

industrial Waste Water Treatment
The application of zeolites to water treatment has several categories, i.e. drinking water filtration; industrial waste; nuclear/radioactive waste treatment, animal Liquid Waste/Slurry treatment and Aquariums/Aquaculture. In each case, the purpose and need for filtration differ and the means of treatment differ.
For instance, in the treatment of drinking water, natural zeolites are not used to soften potable water, but rather to remove troublesome cations that cause odors or foul tastes. An example is the purpose and usefulness of ZeoPrep, a product certified by the Water Quality Association and used specifically to improve the taste of drinking water. Industrial waster water filtration requires filter media of different cation exchange capacities and media mesh sizes, depending upon the chemistry of the contaminant and the nature of the filtration process.
For this purpose the TSM 140 media, produced in a number of mesh sizes, generally ranging from -4+8 mesh to -14+40 mesh, has many applications.

Viscolight
is an animal slurry treatment product
One of the ingredients of Viscolight is a special clinoptilolite zeolite, which serves to achieve the important benefits of:
a) the binding of the ammonium within the slurry that both reduces odors and significantly increases the retention of the nitrogen content that is of major economic benefit, as well as of environmental benefit since the slurry is ultimately spread on the fields as a fertilizer; and
b) the mixing of Viscolight into the slurry creates a floating layer of solid matter that improves the viscosity and reduces the difficulty of pumping thereby reducing the time necessary to clean the lagoon and improves the efficiency of the cleaning process.
There are a number of commercial aquarium filtration products on the market that use Steelhead natural zeolites as the filter media. The following is a list of cations which can be removed by Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For sewage treatment
The high cation exchange capacity (C.E.C.) of Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites combined with their selective affinity for specific cations make them uniquely suited to various applications in water treatment. Natural zeolites have been shown to be effective in industrial and municipal waste water systems.
One of the first full scale projects to incorporate natural zeolites in a municipal tertiary water treatment system
This system, designed by CH2M Hill, utilizes zeolite as an ion exchange medium for the removal of ammonium (NH+4).
The municipal effluent containing ammonium is passed through the natural zeolite which adsorbs the ammonium ion.
The efficiency of ammonium removal is dependent upon temperature, water quality, and rate of flow.
Regeneration of the natural zeolite bed for reuse is achieved by passing a brine solution through it.
The regenerant is then passed through a stripping unit and the ammonium concentrated as ammonium sulfate. (is it removed? What? Bad sentence)
A pilot project using natural zeolites for the removal of ammonium in a potable water system. Similar systems are in production which remove pollutants including heavy metals and radioactive ions from industrial effluents.
An alternative method to a typical tertiary water treatment plant is to apply effluents over natural soils. The soil filters the pollutants from the water as it gradually percolates to the natural ground-water table which may be eventually recovered from wells for reuse.
The soil, as an ion exchange medium, is regenerated by way of crop production capable of removing many of the pollutants. A major limitation of such systems is the requirement for percolation which typically necessitates the use of a sandy soil type not ideal for ion exchange.
The low cation exchange capacity of these sandy soils can then be enhanced through the additions of Steelhead Speicalty Minerals zeolites which will not impede percolation.
Tests of this system were carried out by Dr. Ian Pepper of the University of Arizona. In these tests, a turf grass was used to regenerate the system, and adequate efficiencies of pollutant removal were found to be attainable. Additions of natural zeolites in these systems may be found to favorably improve the holding of heavy metals. Further testing is required to full demonstrate this possibility.
Systems for the specific removal of cations from industrial wastes utilizing natural zeolites as a component of the filter medium have been commercialized. These systems have successfully recovered precious metals from plating operations, as well as, basic industrial pollutants.

Industrial : Refridgeration & Heat Storage
Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites have a high heat of adsorption and their ability to hydrate and dehydrate while maintaining structural stability are useful in various heat storage and solar refrigeration systems. This hygroscopic property, coupled with an inherent exothermic reaction when taken from a dehydrated to hydrated form (heat of adsorption), makes natural zeolites effective in the storage of solar and waste heat energy.
Low energy density and time of availability have been key problems in the use of solar and waste heat energy.
Commercial storage systems have been developed incorporating Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites which overcome these problems. These systems are capable of operating from solar, industrial waste head and other thermal polluters, thereby converting underutilized resources into useful energy.
The capacity of natural zeolites to store heat energy and adsorb water vapor used in that exchange of energy comes from their honeycomb structure and resultant high internal surface are.
When “charged” with heat, Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites can store latent heat energy indefinitely if maintained in a controlled environment and not exposed to water vapor.
This stored energy can be liberated as needed by simple addition of controlled amounts of water vapor which initiates the exothermic reaction. Most other storage media lack this basic property. Heat storage units using natural zeolites reduce dependence on secondary/backup heating systems and allow for efficient and safe use of waste heat.
The principle of adsorption-desorption can be utilized as a key component in the refrigeration. In this case, natural zeolites are used as a transfer mechanism moving water as refrigerant through the condensers and evaporators.
The efficiency of the system is based on the non-linearity of the natural zeolites’ adsorption isotherms as compared to pressure.
Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites will adsorb water vapor at low partial pressure and desorb a majority of it at high partial pressure.
This difference in partial pressure may be achieved through temperature changes which would be experienced in a solar panel going from high day temperatures to low night temperatures.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aquaculture : Filtration & Ammonium Removal
Steelhead Specialty Mineral zeolites are used in intensive fish farming operations to filtrate ammonia, stabilize ph, reduce stress, disease and mortality and to provide a clean healthy environment.
The zeolites also help to maintain healthy bacterial colonies and provide super oxygenated water.
The zeolites high cation exchange capacity (C.E.C.) allows them to be an excellent medium for the removal of toxic ammonia by way of ion exchange; as a physical/chemical filter, or as a biological filter for bacterial breakdown. Plus, the affinity of some species of Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites for nitrogen makes them capable of producing oxygen enriched air for water system aeration.
A variety of systems have been designed and engineered utilizing Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites in the reduction of ammonia in fish rearing environments. ( See illustration) Our zeolites are also used in the trans-shipment of fish lowering mortality by eliminating toxic ammonia build up in transport water.
Used as a substrate in biological filters, Steelhead Specialty Minerals zeolites are remarkably effective as well.
They provide a suitable habitat for the growth of the bacterial populations required in the breakdown of NH4 to NH3.
The zeolites remain effective as chemical filters capable of modifying fluctuations in the system’s NH4 available to bacteria at a more stable level, thus enabling the bacteria population to remain abundant during periods of low NH4 contamination.
